Trans Joy – Shawls

Trans Joy is my weekly blog series celebrating the positive side of trans experiences, in an attempt to bring some balance to contemporary trans discourses. This week I’m talking about my shawls 🙂

I am gender fluid and have a build best described as like a partially shaved gorilla. I have gotten more comfortable with my body over the last few years, but sometimes dysphoria still flares up, most commonly around my broad shoulders. This is especially annoying given how much femme clothing leaves shoulders exposed. I was chatting about this with Victoria, a former partner and still one of my most treasured friends.

The next time she came to visit she brought several shawls she’d made for me. Colorful, beautifully patterned, and elegantly flowing. They cover my shoulders and make me feel far more comfortable in my body on days when I need that extra help. But more than that, I love the thought that went into it. I love that she listened to how I was feeling about my body and, without any prompting on my part, took the time to make something to help me with it.

The shawls themselves are beautiful, but where they came from means immeasurably more.

I hope you all find some joy this week too ❤
