Trans Joy is a weekly blog series celebrating the positive side of trans experiences, in an attempt to bring some balance to contemporary trans discourses. This week we have a guest post by AJ, talking about their experience of coming out at work.
At time of writing, yesterday was the first time I wore a pronoun badge at work. I came out at work a few weeks ago, with the help of an openly out LGBT colleague. They acted as point person, so I didn’t have to deal with people’s responses to the news directly (which was awesome, so glad I was able to avoid awkward questions).
It’s been great to be able to use my chosen name and pronouns in my work email signature and when signing in to the office, and to hear my colleagues call me by my name. Everything feels right – like it’s all clicking into place.
But I realised that I still felt like it was somehow too direct, too ‘in people’s faces’, to wear a pronoun badge, like it was expecting too much. Yesterday, inspired and buoyed by famous youtuber Nikkietutorials coming out as trans, I decided to do it. Words cannot describe how overjoyed I felt adding my trans pride and pronoun badges to my lanyard, and proudly stating my identity for the world to see. I’m so proud of our trans community. I am me, and I am allowed to be out and proud ❤
I hope you all find some joy this week too ❤ If you want to contribute to this project then please get in touch 🙂
